Reading an EPD — what the environmental data actually means

Environmental Product Declarations cut through vague “green” claims with verified, life-cycle data — here's how to read one and compare floors with confidence.

“Sustainable” has become one of the most over-used words in flooring. Almost every brand claims some kind of environmental credential, yet the language is often loose, selective, or impossible to compare from one supplier to the next. As buyers and specifiers rightly push for more accountability, a vague “eco-friendly” sticker no longer carries much weight.

Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs, exist to close that gap. An EPD is a standardised, independently verified document that sets out the measured environmental impact of a specific product — not a slogan, but data. For anyone trying to weigh the real footprint of one floor against another, it is the most reliable place to look. The catch is that its value only emerges once you know how to read it.

What an EPD actually is — and isn’t

An EPD reports the environmental performance of a product across its entire life, drawing on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The LCA traces the product from raw-material harvesting and manufacturing through transport, installation and everyday use, all the way to what happens at the end of its service life.

Just as important is what an EPD is not. It is not a marketing badge, and it does not crown winners. It makes no standalone claim that a product is “green”, and it does not rank one floor above another. Instead it provides a consistent, third-party verified dataset so that products assessed by the same method can be compared on equal terms. In short, an EPD gives objective, comparable, independently checked information about a product’s environmental performance over its whole life cycle.

How the data is organised

Because an EPD follows the full life cycle, it reports impacts stage by stage: the sourcing of raw materials, manufacturing, transport and distribution, installation and use, and end-of-life outcomes such as disposal, recycling or reuse. That structure gives a far fuller picture than any single snapshot could.

Within those stages the numbers are grouped into environmental impact categories. You will typically see carbon footprint (often labelled global warming potential), energy use, water consumption, resource depletion, emissions to air, water and soil, and total waste generated. Presented as technical tables it can feel dense at first — but that rigour is exactly what makes the figures comparable across products and manufacturers.

Reading one without drowning in numbers

The goal is not to scrutinise every figure; it is to read the patterns. Three habits help:

  1. Follow the life-cycle stages, not isolated numbers. The useful insight is where impact occurs — whether it is driven mainly by sourcing, manufacturing or transport — rather than any single value in a table.
  2. Compare like with like. An EPD is only meaningful against another product assessed with the same methodology and system boundaries. Comparing across different product types or assumptions will mislead you.
  3. Look for overall trends, not perfect scores. EPDs are not ratings, and there is no “best” result — only different impact profiles depending on how a product is made and sourced. The value is transparency, not a leaderboard.

Putting EPDs to work

An EPD earns its keep when it informs a decision. In practice it is most useful not as a standalone document but as a tool for clearer material selection, fairer product comparison and more transparent specification. With verified, standardised data in hand, comparing like-for-like floors becomes far more straightforward — and a great deal more trustworthy than competing “green” claims.

Ultimately, the right choice depends on your project’s priorities, whether that is lowering embodied carbon, improving sourcing transparency, or understanding a material’s full life-cycle footprint.
