Acoustic performance in hybrid flooring — a designer's guide
Impact insulation class, integrated underlay specs, and how to spec for apartments where IIC 50+ is mandatory.
Hybrid flooring spends most of its life being measured by sight and touch — colour, sheen, the way the click sits underfoot. But in apartments, mixed-use towers and townhouses, it is measured just as often by ear. The way a floor handles impact and airborne noise decides whether neighbours coexist quietly or trade complaints, and it is one of the first things a strata committee or a building surveyor will ask about.
The good news is that modern SPC hybrid is a strong acoustic performer when it is specified and installed correctly. The less good news is that the language used to describe acoustic performance — IIC, dB, L'nT,w, AAAC stars — can feel deliberately opaque. This article unpacks what those numbers really mean, where they come from, and how to set realistic expectations before the first plank goes down.
What the ratings actually measure
Two questions matter most. The first is impact: when something is dropped or someone walks across the floor above, how much sound transfers through to the room below. The second is airborne: how well voices, televisions and music move through the floor/ceiling assembly. These are governed by separate test standards and the values cannot be swapped or averaged.
In Australia the National Construction Code references field-measured impact performance via L'nT,w, where lower numbers are better. The American IIC scale is more common on imported product datasheets — there, higher is better. A hybrid plank tested over a 1.5 mm IXPE underlay might quote an IIC of 65–68 on a concrete reference slab, which sounds reassuring until you remember the slab in your building may behave very differently.
Underlay does most of the work
It is tempting to read the IIC figure on the hybrid datasheet and stop there. In practice, the underlay layer beneath the plank — and the structural slab beneath that — control most of the impact result. A pre-attached 1 mm pad gives convenience and modest dampening; a separate high-density acoustic underlay, properly seamed, can deliver substantially better numbers and is what most strata schemes are really asking for.

What strata committees usually require
Most by-laws written after the early 2000s nominate either a minimum AAAC star rating or a maximum L'nT,w measured in situ. Four-star AAAC, which corresponds to L'nT,w of 50 dB or lower, is the most common benchmark for apartment hard flooring; five-star schemes are common in premium developments. These figures are pass/fail thresholds, not aspirational targets, and the test is performed on the finished assembly.
A good specifier reads the by-law before choosing the plank, not after. Subfloor and edge detailing
Acoustic underlays only perform when they are continuous. Penetrations, joins around plumbing risers and contact with skirting or door frames create flanking paths that bypass the underlay and conduct impact directly into the structure. A 6–8 mm perimeter expansion gap, isolated with a closed-cell foam strip rather than rigid silicone, preserves the system rating.
The slab itself matters too. A 200 mm post-tensioned slab dampens impact noise far better than a 120 mm precast plank with no topping. If the structure is light, the acoustic underlay does more work; if the building is solid, the floor finish makes a smaller proportional difference.
How to read a hybrid acoustic datasheet
Three things to check on any hybrid acoustic datasheet. First, the test standard cited — ISO 10140 for laboratory, ISO 16283 for field — because lab numbers are usually 5–10 dB more flattering than field. Second, the reference slab thickness; an IIC quoted on a 150 mm slab will not be repeatable on a 100 mm slab. Third, the underlay used in the test, which is the only one the number applies to.
