Slip resistance R-ratings — wet-area specification for designers
AS 4586 testing explained, R9 to R13 ratings in plain language, and how to specify confidently for kitchens, bathrooms, hospitality, and aged care.
Slip resistance is one of those quietly important specifications that nobody asks about until it becomes the most important specification. In a residential bathroom it is a comfort question; in a commercial entry foyer it is a regulatory one; in a hospitality venue with wet floors and patron flow it is the difference between a designed experience and an incident report.
This article explains the two slip-rating systems used in Australia — R ratings under the European ramp test, and P ratings under the Australian wet pendulum test — and where each one applies. They are not interchangeable, and the wrong one quoted in a specification can quietly fail an audit later.
R ratings, briefly
The R rating system comes from German Standard DIN 51130 and uses an oil-wetted inclined ramp with a tester wearing safety boots. The angle at which the tester slips defines the rating. R9 covers internal dry environments; R10 entry foyers and changerooms; R11 industrial workplaces and external paving; R12 demanding industrial floors; R13 specialist surfaces in food processing and similar.
R ratings are useful but they are not the Australian standard. They appear frequently on imported product datasheets and are a reasonable proxy for the P rating in most cases, but they are not the rating an Australian specifier should be quoting in a slip-rated specification.
P ratings under AS 4586
Australian Standard AS 4586 covers wet pendulum testing for new pedestrian surface materials. The pendulum drops a foot-shaped slider onto a wetted sample; the swing height after impact gives a slider value, which translates to a P rating from P0 to P5. P3 is the typical residential bathroom minimum; P4 is the typical commercial public-area minimum; P5 is high-risk wet areas like swimming pool surrounds.

Where each rating applies
For a commercial fit-out the right question is "what is the SAI Global classification for this surface in this room?" — and the answer should reference the P rating. R ratings, if quoted, should be treated as supporting information rather than the headline number.
For residential projects, slip ratings rarely appear in the specification but they should still inform the choice. A bathroom floor should be P3 minimum; an entry foyer that gets wet from external paving should be P4 minimum. Slip resistance in engineered timber
Engineered timber is rarely specified to a wet pendulum rating because it is not generally a wet-area floor — but its slip behaviour still matters. A matte lacquer finish reads at P3 in typical residential conditions; a high-gloss finish drops noticeably when wet. The finish article covers the relevant choices.

Specification practice
A complete slip-rated specification quotes the standard (AS 4586 or AS/NZS 4663), the rating (P3, P4, etc.), the test condition (dry, wet, oil-wetted), and the surface texture. Where a higher rating is required for accessibility or safety compliance, the documentation should reference the source — typically the National Construction Code, the relevant Australian Standard, or a workplace health and safety risk assessment.

What changes the rating in service
A slip rating is measured on a new sample under controlled conditions. Real-world floors drift over time as the surface accumulates polish, dust, cleaning residue and traffic wear. A floor that was P4 at install can read P3 at year five if maintained with the wrong chemistry — silicone polishes and wax-based cleaners are the most common offenders. The remediation is usually a deep clean with a manufacturer-approved cleaner, followed by a re-test.
