Colour. From within. “We don’t stain timber. We activate it.”

A traditional stain mostly introduces colour at the surface. It can look even. It can look controlled. But it often sits on the timber rather than belonging to it.

COLOURGRAIN RT™ works the other way.

It is a reactive colouring process that develops colour from within the wood itself, working with the timber’s natural tannins and character, rather than covering the grain with a uniform coat of pigment.

The result isn’t colour that looks painted on.

It’s colour that feels like it has always belonged to the timber.

Why timber already holds the story

Like all living things, wood changes as it ages. Much of that transformation comes from tannins, natural compounds found in different amounts across tree species. They help protect the living tree, and over time, as timber meets air, light and environment, those tannins slowly shift. Deeper tones appear. Complexity builds. A natural patina forms.

That ageing process usually takes years.

COLOURGRAIN RT™ works with the same chemistry, accelerating reactions associated with natural oxidation and ageing, so colour develops from within the board rather than waiting decades for nature to finish the job.

We don’t mask what the timber already is. We reveal and enhance it.

How COLOURGRAIN RT™ works

With COLOURGRAIN RT™, the timber is treated with reactive agents, including metal salts, which interact with its naturally occurring tannins and other wood components, including cellulose.

This isn’t a topical colour wash. It’s a reaction.

Minerals bond with the tannins, altering how they present visually and producing organic shifts in tone. Because every board has its own composition, tannin levels, grain pattern, knots, mineral content — no two planks respond exactly the same.

That is the point. Natural differences influence the reaction, creating:

• greater depth • beautiful variation • richer patina • movement that follows the grain, knots and character already present in the timber

Rather than laying a flat colour over the board, COLOURGRAIN RT™ enhances what nature has already created.

Depth you can’t apply. Only reveal.

Double Reactive Technology

The timber undergoes an additional reactive treatment, allowing the reaction to develop with greater intensity, depth and variation. That can produce richer patinas and more expressive tonal movement — while further highlighting the individual characteristics of each plank.

The objective isn’t perfect uniformity. It is to let the natural material create part of the design.

Others chase sameness. We chase character that feels honest.

The difference you can see

Traditional topical stain:

• Colour largely introduced at the surface • Can read as applied or coated • Often seeks uniformity • Can mask grain and detail

COLOURGRAIN RT™:

• Colour developed from within • Feels integrated with the timber • Embraces natural variation • Reveals and enhances grain, knots and movement

A topical stain primarily introduces colour at the surface. COLOURGRAIN RT™ works with the timber.

The natural grain stays central to the appearance. Colour and timber character become visually integrated, creating a finish that feels natural, organic, and inherently part of the wood rather than added to it. Colour that lives inside the grain, not over it.

Others cover. We reveal.

Why authentic European Oak matters

Reactive colouring depends on the timber’s own chemistry. High tannin content is the key ingredient that makes the reaction rich and expressive.

That’s why authentic Western European Oak is so important to this story. It is renowned for the tannin levels that allow reactive colouring to develop with depth, vibrancy and beautifully layered tones. Lower-tannin oaks simply can’t respond in the same way. When the reaction has less to work with, the result has less to give.

At The Flooring Lab, that authenticity sits alongside the wider promise of our floors: know where it came from, know what you’re living on, and know that the colour you’re seeing was revealed from within, not merely applied on top.

Colour with care

Reactive colouring isn’t only about beauty. Done well, it supports a more considered approach to finishing, working with the timber’s natural composition rather than relying solely on heavy surface pigment.

Combined with our commitment to healthier indoor living and responsible manufacturing pathways, COLOURGRAIN RT™ sits in the same conversation as the rest of the Flooring Lab story: “Traceable origin. Authentic European Oak. Colour developed from within. Greater confidence in the air you breathe.”

Four ideas. One trusted journey.

One sentence that says it all

COLOURGRAIN RT™ works with the natural character of timber to develop colour from within, creating extraordinary depth, variation and patina. Rather than covering the grain with colour, it reveals and enhances what nature has already created, producing a floor where the colour feels like it has always belonged to the timber.
